When a distribution network runs at 24 kV or below, the CGMcosmos 24 kV switchgear from Ormazabal is one of the most widely used answers for secondary switchgear: compact, gas-insulated and modular. This article covers what sets it apart, how it is built, which functions it offers, what its catalog figures say and what to consider today, with SF6 at the center of the regulatory debate in Europe.
CGMcosmos is a modular, compact (RMU) medium-voltage switchgear system for public and industrial secondary distribution up to 24 kV. According to Ormazabal's technical catalog, the switching elements and busbar sit inside a stainless steel tank filled with SF6 gas, fully sealed for life. That integral insulation makes it insensitive to its environment (the catalog itself cites an immersion test at 3 meters of water column for 24 hours) and removes maintenance of live parts.
It is the typical unit of a transformer substation: it receives the line, sectionalizes the network and protects the transformer, each function in a front less than half a meter wide.
The system is assembled from single-function or multi-function modules. The most common positions are:
Most common CGMcosmos modules
Compact units (for example, two lines and one fuse protection) cut civil works and assembly time in a standard transformer substation.
Modules are joined electrically with the ORMALINK set, patented by Ormazabal in 1991. It connects the main busbars of extensible units, carries the current and controls the electric field. In practice, if you install one line and one protection today, you can add another position tomorrow without replacing what is already there, a key advantage for networks that grow in stages.
Specification lesson. Before ordering a CGMcosmos, define three data points: the network voltage level (24 kV or below), the rated current needed (400 or 630 A on the busbars) and the function of each position. With those, the layout almost resolves itself.
The catalog describes interlocks that prevent the switch-disconnector and the earthing switch from being closed at the same time, and a lock that prevents opening the medium-voltage cable access cover while the earthing switch is open. It accepts up to three padlocks and a voltage presence indicator (ekorVPIS). The system is also designed and tested against internal arc to protect people.
Reference data (Ormazabal CGMcosmos catalog)
These are reference values from the public catalog; each unit's nameplate and current datasheet prevail, and should be confirmed with the manufacturer before specifying.
SF6 is a very potent greenhouse gas and its use in switchgear is under regulatory pressure. In the European Union, the F-gas regulation states that, from 2026, medium-voltage switchgear up to 24 kV for primary or secondary distribution may not contain fluorinated gases such as SF6, and that from 2030 the restriction extends to equipment above 24 kV and up to 52 kV, with case-by-case derogations where no alternatives are available on the market.
It is a European rule, not a Colombian one, but it signals where the market is heading. For projects in Colombia, the practical advice is: sealed-for-life tanks, with leak control and responsible end-of-life handling, remain a valid, proven technical solution; and it is wise to document the insulation type in the specification so SF6-free alternatives can be compared when a project asks for them.
CGMcosmos is combined with a distribution transformer and a low-voltage board to form a transformer substation. Industrias Ectricol integrates these elements at its plant in Funza, Cundinamarca, with advice on choosing each position's function and on-site support. See the CGMcosmos switchgear page, and the full family overview in our article on Ormazabal medium-voltage switchgear.
Up to 24 kV. For 36 kV networks, Ormazabal offers the CGM.3 family.
RMU (ring main unit) is a compact switchgear for ring networks. Modular means it can be extended with more modules through ORMALINK without replacing the existing ones.
According to Ormazabal's catalog, its SF6 tank is sealed for life and needs no maintenance of live parts. Mechanisms, interlocks and connections should still be inspected under the operator's maintenance plan.
Usually the P function (fuse protection). If you need relay-based protection and tripping, the V function (circuit breaker).

The nameplate on a low-voltage switchboard looks like a list of acronyms, but three of them decide whether the equipment survives a short circuit: Icw, Ipk and Icc. If those values sit below the fault...
